I’m writing to share information about an exciting project from the Performing and Visual Art House, Mather Art Club, and students in my 7th and 8th period art classes. We’ve been involved in an Empty Bowls service learning project to fight hunger and food insecurity.
The idea that many people throughout the world and in our community live on one bowl of food a day, struggle with food insecurity and the problems of hunger, is a focus of this project. Additionally, I see this experience as a way for Mather students to reach out to the community and bring students, parents and residents together in support of a worthy cause. This in turn will help us to recognize what we are grateful for – family, friends, neighbors and food!
This project has been made possible through support from Donors Choose, Northeastern Illinois University, CPS Service Learning, SLC initiative, and The North River Commission. We’re in the process of securing donations for the food to be served and a few Mather teachers have volunteered to cook something. But, if anyone has any connections to restaurants who would like to support this cause please let me know, and feel free to forward this email.
So far we’ve created nearly 60 bowls. On the dinner, May 4th, we hope to serve between 60-100 guests. Please let me know if you would like to reserve a spot(s). At this point we plan to sell tickets at the door, but we may sell some beforehand.
